Characters Drama Based Learning Ltd is a well established role play/skills practice company with 22 years of experience.

Our clients include the Police Service, Social Care, National Crime Agency, NHS, The Priory, HM Prison Service, International Criminal Court (The Hague), Patient Safety Science, Rail Accident Investigation Branch as well as various corporate companies throughout the UK.

The cornerstone of successful drama based learning is a realistic and convincing portrayal of people and their behaviours that moves the experience beyond a training room exercise to a real-as-life encounter. Our experience shows that people learn most effectively from practical exercises combined with honest and helpful feedback delivered in a positive and sensitive way. We have also worked on many training films for the majority of our clients.

We operate with a minimum of overheads which means that we can consistently deliver outstanding and competitive value for money.

Role Play

Achieving Excellence Through Role Play

What Is Roleplay?

Many training and development sessions struggle with the training transfer - moving skills from the workshop to the actual workplace. A large reason for this is the lack of opportunity to practice these skills in a realistic and authentic environment.

Enter stage right: Roleplay by Characters.

Roleplay has been a mainstay technique within learning, development and professional training for a number of years, and Characters has a rich history of delivering roleplay courses for a wide range of industries and clients. Characters has built on the roleplay tradition to create a sophisicated and impactful technique based on "one to one" skills practice and detailed feedback.

Characters provide trained and experienced actors to play a role in a work based scenario, where participants in the session act as they normally would, with the benefit of being able to try out alternative approaches without the fear of consequences. Characters provide a safe environment where experimentation is encouraged, as in the real world, it's not always possible to "have another go" when something goes wrong.

Will It Work For My Organization?

Characters' learning programmes are bespoke - we start every project from a fresh perspective built on a wealth of experience across multiple industries. We thoroughly research your needs and objectives, as well as the culture of your organization.

The Characters approach caters for different learning styles, featuring a wealth of content and expertise, backed up by measured and informative feedback sessions and reviews.

Characters teach by way of showing, not telling, asking our clients and their employees to think for themselves, and become better for it. All of our scenarios feel real, genuine, and act as a stimulus for honest and open debate and discussion.

Most importantly though, the Characters method of drama-based learning will help to elevate any organization's training platform.

Training Videos

Achieving Excellence Through Rich Media Content

What Are Training Videos?

Alongside Characters' Roleplay services, we offer a range of possibilities to enhance and extend your learning and development programmes through the use of our training videos.

High quality filmed drama entertains as it informs, provides lasting learning and enables clients and their employees to create blended personal development and training programmes that are scalable to any business size.

Utilising a cinema-screen approach along with video based scenarios, facilitator-led discussions, group working and interactive exercises with a professional actor provides an all-encompassing workshop format that caters for a wide range of learning styles.

About

Characters

Cath Hamilton - Large

Training through role play

Catherine Hamilton (Owner & Company Director) trained at The Guildford School Of Acting in the 80’s. She combined an acting career with work in a hospital & community health setting for 8 years. She also began roleplaying for the Police and Social Care during this time and before long, she found that this was the path she wished to follow full time.

The success of her work as a sole trader lead to Characters Drama Based Learning being registered as a Limited Company in 2006.

Characters' professional role actors are carefully selected through an audition and interview process led by company director, Catherine Hamilton. She looks for emotionally intelligent professional actors who understand the difference between a role exercise and an acting performance. They must be brave, flexible and organised.

On some courses for the PoliceSocial CareNHS & The Priory, they must have the knowledge and ability to play vulnerable and/or intimidated adults with learning, physical and mental health difficulties as well as children of all abilities above the age of 4.

They must be able to sustain their roles throughout a complete interview from introductions to closure.

We understand the need to remain in role even if the learners are struggling. We have techniques that enable us to encourage and guide the learner through difficult moments during the interview, where appropriate to do so.

During debrief sessions, we offer our feedback from a ‘how we, as the character, were made to feel’ perspective rather than telling your professionals how to do their job. We fully recognise that that is not our place. The role actors must respect the need for confidentiality at all times as many of the courses we work on reveal sensitive subject matter that should not be discussed outside the work place.

All of our role actors are very aware that many of the characters we are asked to portray have suffered some kind of physical/mental/sexual abuse. Catherine takes great care to ensure that each role actor she supplies is comfortable with this for very important health & safety reasons.

We work with Counter Terrorism branches of the police in the UK & overseas along side forensic psychologists (https://www.theguardian.com/news/2017/oct/13/the-scientists-persuading-terrorists-to-spill-their-secrets?CMP=share_btn_link) helping them train their officers in specialised interview techniques.
